Canoe and/or Kayak Coach Award (DST)

Canoe and/or Kayak Coach Award (Sheltered Water DST)

Join a vibrant community of paddlesport enthusiasts who are passionate about learning, coaching, and sharing their love for the water. The Canoe and/or Kayak Coach Award is designed to support your development as a coach, offering both formal and informal learning opportunities.

Who Is This Course For?
This award is ideal for those who coach in a sheltered water environment and want to help paddlers build their skills and confidence. It’s suitable for:

  • Self-employed coaches
  • Volunteers or club coaches
  • Staff at centres or outdoor organisations

As a Canoe and/or Kayak Coach, you’ll need to demonstrate competence in at least of these craft types. The training will cover both crafts, you can then go on to become a qualified coach for crafts, or choose to focus on a preffere one. There are other coaching qualifications you can sign up to, you can see the full list here.

Why Choose This Award?
Many organisations seek Canoe and Kayak Coaches for lead instructor or senior roles at multi-activity centres. This qualification equips you to:

  • Coach beginners and developing paddlers in canoe and/or kayak
  • Deliver tailored sessions in sheltered water environments
  • Work independently or as part of a club, centre, or organisation

What Can You Deliver as a Coach?
Once qualified, you’ll be able to offer a range of Paddle UK awards and training, including:

  • Personal Performance Awards – Start, Discover, and Explore
  • Safety Training – Paddle Safer Course
  • Instructor Development – Opens up the pathway to deliver instructor training, depending on level of experience and other qualifications obtained.

Beyond the Qualification
This course isn’t just about coaching—it’s about connection. Many participants build lasting friendships and networks through shared experiences and a mutual love of paddlesport.

Structure

This is a two day training course, following on from the Core Coach Training you will need to have done beforehand. Once you have completed this training you will be given an action plan, to prepare for an assessment to gain the award.

The course will be delivered by Jenna Sanders and Katy Brennan.
